Drinks. Drinkies. Draaaaanks. Whatever your favorite libation nickname, the art of making cocktails is a timeless tradition you should all plan to participate in this summer. This article is brought to you by special request from an Instagram friend who requested just this: “summer drinks.” Of course I was more than happy to oblige and subsequently hosted a very sophisticated cocktail tasting at my home with some of Iowa’s most qualified libation experts. Ahem. Each of the delicious creations below were a favorite by one or more of the taste testers. Nobody likes a long intro on drink post, so let’s get to it, shall we?
1.) The Grapefruit Mimosa
Yo, this was my absolutely favorite. I’m fairly biased because I love brunch so much and what is brunch without a mimosa, amiright? This one is such a nice change of pace and equally as delicious as the original. The ratio, my friends, is key. All you need to do is add a little more than a splash of grapefruit juice to a champagne flute and top with your favorite sparkling rosé. Add a grapefruit garnish and you’re all set for a fancy brunch with your faves. And this particular drink is just as pretty as it is tasty.
You will need:
*I used Cupcake brand sparkling rosé and Ocean Spray brand grapefruit juice but use whatever brands you like best.
2.) The Grapefruit Mule
Listen, I know this one has grapefruit juice in it too. But, I’m ballin’ on a budget and need to keep my expenses down. It’s as simple as that! As I said earlier, this was a favorite among one of my cronies as well. A bit sweeter than the first, but super refreshing and great for patio sipping. Fill a mule mug of ice. Add 2 ounces of your favorite vodka. I actually used raspberry flavored vodka this time and it was delish! Then add 4 ounces of ginger beer. I like the light or diet version because fewer calories mean (say it with me) more drinks. Yes, that’s right! Add 1 ounce grapefruit juice and a healthy splash of lime juice. Stir, sip and enjoy! It’s important to measure this one out, because she’s a fickle gal and you need to get the proportions correct. No eye-balling her.
You will need:
2 oz. vodka
4 oz. ginger beer
1 oz. grapefruit juice
Healthy splash of lime juice
*Any brands will do here but I used Ocean Spray grapefruit juice, RealLime lime juice and Goslings brand ginger beer.
3.) The Beermosa
That’s right, my friends. You read that correctly. Beer-mosa. Sounds wacky but let me tell you something, it is YUM-O. All you need for this lovely is two ingredients: your favorite brand of tangerine wheat beer (or orange wheat) and Prosecco. I have fallen in love with Lion Bridge’s Tag beer recently and highly recommend using that if you’re in Iowa. (You can buy Tag at most beer retailers if you live in the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City area: Hy-Vee, Benz, John’s Grocery.) Any of your favorite brands of Prosecco will do. All you need to do to make the beermosa is mix equal parts beer to Prosecco. And that’s it! What could be simpler than that!?!
You will need:
Tangerine or orange wheat beer
Oh man, I don’t know about you, but I’m thirsty! BRB while I go make myself a drink…
Which drink will you be making this summer?
See ya on the next post.
