Fashion 3peat: How to Wear a Turtleneck

Let’s talk about how to wear a turtleneck, shall we? I know what you’re probably thinking. Turtlenecks are so 90’s. I get it. Trust me. I did the 90’s turtleneck. Looney Tunes sweatshirts were my jam as a kid and my favorite character was Tasmanian Devil – Taz for short. I know what you’re thinking, and no, I wasn’t cool…or popular despite my clearly refined fashion sense at that particular moment in history. It was a simpler time… Listen, I may be nostalgic but kid’s clothes actually were simpler when I was growing up. You know, because we dressed like (gasp) kids. Moving on. Under each sweatshirt? You guessed it! A turtleneck! Yes, that’s right. What 90’s Midwest winter ensemble would be complete without a white turtleneck? The perfect layering piece. Not only did I sport that white turtleneck with pride, I am fairly certain I also owned…a Dickie turtleneck. A Dickie was perfect for the days when two layers were too hot but you still needed that extra layering piece to really finish off your Looney Tunes getup. Oh, and don’t forget the swishy pants!

Not only did I don the 90’s turtleneck, but I also donned the 2000’s turtleneck. In fact, my senior photos were taken in a green turtleneck sweater. My taste in fashion had advanced significantly by that time and I can say, with confidence that I would wear that same turtleneck sweater today. Not that it would fit, but that is totally beside the point. The one thing I did get right was the idea of layering. I will layer just about anything and I happen to believe that a turtleneck is a great laying piece. It also works wonders hiding any extra chins that may have popped up out of nowhere this time of year. Not that I would personally know anything about that, but I’ve heard stories.

Don’t believe my claims to the turtleneck game? Check out the following Fashion 3peat, where I share with you how to wear a turtleneck 3 ways. This wardrobe staple is currently on sale for $19.99. I am wearing here in a size large and as I type, it is available in XS, M, L and also X-3X in a lovely navy/white combo.

Option #1: Keep it simple and pair with a flirty skirt. I would totally wear this look to the office any day of the week.

Option #2: Remember what I said about layers above? Try layering a turtleneck under a sleeveless dress. Pro tip: size down if you’re only planning to use this piece to wear under a dress. It will help minimize anything you’re not so proud to show off underneath.

Option #3: Cool as a cucumber. I don’t know what it is about a leather (or faux leather) jacket that makes me feel so damn cool, but it does every single time.

If you’re still suffering from turtleneck PTSD, I highly recommend giving them another shot. You might surprise yourself. Thanks for tuning in to this week’s Fashion 3peat! I sincerely hope it was helpful.

See ya on the next post!

Loved your post, Megan! My name is Brian Thomann and I too had swishy pants! They were noisy as can be, but so comfortable. Mine were red Adidas with white stripes. What color were yours?
