French Onion Sliders
Ingredients
- 1 package Hawaiian rolls – sweet or savory
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1 package chive & shallot Boursin cheese
- 1 1/2 large white or yellow onions
- 2 Tbsp butter (plus additional for topping rolls, optional)
- 2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil (plus additional for topping rolls, optional)
- fresh thyme to taste
- salt to taste
- fresh cracked pepper to taste
- 6-8 ounces gruyere cheese, shredded
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Add butter and extra virgin olive oil to a pan over medium heat. Slice onions (with the grain) and add to the pan. Reduce heat to medium low and cook onions until they start to caramelize.
- Brown ground beef. While beef is browning add garlic powder, onion powder, salt to taste and pepper to taste. When ground beef is cooked, add Boursin cheese to the beef and stir until thoroughly combined.
- Cut Hawaiian rolls in half so that there is a bottom layer and top layer. To the bottom half of the bread add beef, followed by the onions, then cheese, thyme and the top of the rolls.
- Brush rolls with melted butter or extra virgin olive oil if preferred. This is optional, but helps keep the rolls moist.
- Bake on a parchment lined baking sheet at 350 degrees for 10-15 minutes or until the cheese has melted and the sandwiches are heated through. If you make ahead of time and place in the fridge before baking, you may need additional heat time.
- Enjoy!

CHECKERED BOARD
Love the above checkered board? Yeah, I love it too! It’s even more stunning in person and would make a great gift for the holidays or a birthday. You can find the exact board I use in many of my recipes and videos here.
SUBSTITUTIONS FOR GRUYERE CHEESE
You can really use any cheese you like in this recipe. I recommend buying a block and shredding it yourself as the cheese melts better. If you’re my mother and reading this, I know you’re not a fan of shredding or chopping, so feel free to buy a bag of shredded cheese if you must. š If you can’t find gruyere or it is out of your budget, try Swiss, fontina, provolone or mozzarella. As with any recipe, use what you like! I absolutely loved the gruyere with this recipe. Swiss would be my next choice.
HAWAIIAN ROLLS – SWEET OR SAVORY
I used the sweet Hawaiian rolls for this recipe, but you can use the savory or slider buns if you think the sweet version will be too sweet for you. You can’t go wrong – both are delicious.
KITCHEN TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT
You will need a few standard kitchen tools for this recipe including a pastry brush for the rolls and a baking sheet.Ā You can find many of my favorite kitchen tools here.
