French Onion Swirls

If you love French onion soup, you will love the flavor of these French onion swirls. They are perfect for appetizer night or brunch. I personally love an all appetizer night! It’s my favorite kind of meal, but I’m an apps girl. I created this recipe because my Spinach Artichoke Swirls were so popular, so wanted to create another flavor.

French Onion Swirls

Ingredients

  • 1 puff pastry sheet
  • 2 medium sized onions (white or yellow)
  • 2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 Tbsp butter
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp onion recipe soup & dip mix seasoning (I use Lipton)
  • 4 ounces cream cheese
  • 1 tsp thyme leaves
  • salt to taste
  • fresh cracked pepper to taste
  • red pepper flakes optional, to taste
  • 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
  • 1 egg

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Thaw 1 sheet of puff pastry.
  • Heat extra virgin olive oil and butter in a pan over medium heat. Slice onions and add to the pan. Sauté onions over medium low heat until onions start to brown.
  • Add onion soup mix seasoning, stir and sauté for 5 minutes.
  • In a bowl, mix together the cooked onions with cream cheese, salt, pepper and red pepper flakes.
  • Cut puff pastry sheet in half.
  • Spread onion and cream cheese mixture on one puff pastry sheet.
  • Top with Swiss cheese and 1/2 tsp thyme.
  • Lay the other puff pastry on top of the onion mixture so that the mixture is sandwiched between the puff pastry sheets.
  • Using a sharp knife, cut puff pastry into 6 even strips (cut the long side so you have long strips rather than short strips).
  • Twist each strip and roll into swirls (see photos below), making sure to tuck the ends under the swirls so it stays intact while baking.
  • Brush each with egg wash (one egg beaten with 1 tsp water).
  • Place on a parchment paper lined baking sheet. Bake at 400 degrees for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown and pastry is cooked through. Every oven is different so bake time may vary.
  • Top with remaining thyme if desired.
  • Let cool slightly (best served warm) and enjoy!

CAN THIS RECIPE BE DOUBLED?

Yes! These French onion swirls can absolutely be doubled. The above recipe is for 1 pastry sheet, which makes 6. However, you can easily double the recipe to make 12 if you’re serving a crowd.

KITCHEN TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT

You will need a few standard kitchen tools for this recipe including a pastry brush for the egg wash and a baking sheet. You can find many of my favorite kitchen tools here.

WHAT TO DO WITH LEFTOVER ONION SOUP MIX

The typical size of a package of onion soup mix is approximately 3 tablespoons. This recipe calls for approximately 1/2 of the package. If you’re not sure what to do with the leftovers, I highly recommend making a French onion dip! Just mix the remaining seasoning with 6-8 ounces of sour cream or plain Greek yogurt. Try adding some caramelized onions for an elevated flavor and top with fresh chives. It’s so delicious, you won’t want to stop eating it!

Can these be made ahead of time?

They are best the day of, but the onion mixture can be made a day in advance.

Absolutely love this recipe! Followed it to the letter and it was superb! Going in my Top 10 Collection for dinner parties and party parties. Cut them a bit thinner because they do puff up big!
