It’s been more than 2 years since we moved into our house. I was delusional when we moved in because I thought I could move in, HGTV it up in a matter of months, and call it a day. As it turns out, decor takes time…and money. Two very valuable, yet limited resources. In that amount of time, I have totally neglected my front porch. I use the term “porch” loosely. Most of my focus on the exterior of my home has been dedicated to keeping my plants alive. Sad, but very true. I barely know a rose bush from a hydrangea so suffice it to say it’s not something that comes naturally to me. With all my energy focused on the plants, I have spent very little time and energy on decor for my porch. Even my husband started commenting on the lack of personality to our outdoor space: “You really need to do something out there…” Noted.
*Thank you, Homemakers for sponsoring this post. I had so much fun styling this space!*
So off to Homemakers we went. If you live in Iowa and have never been to Homemakers, I don’t know what you’re doing with your life. That place makes me completely GAGA. I could spend hours in that store. Well, let’s face it – I have. Most people know Homemakers for their huge selection of furniture, but they also have an incredible amount of home decor. AND, a massive throw pillow wall. You know how I feel about throw pillows. My only regret leaving the store that day was the fact that I did not get any throw pillows… My husband, however, was thrilled to be leaving the store sans throw pillows and sometimes it’s more important to keep the peace if ya know what I’m saying. Much to his chagrin, I’ll be sneaking them in later anyway. Can’t stop, won’t stop.
Allow me to present you with the before. It’s a sad space. But, you will notice the plants are still alive. Go me.
Feeling pretty confident in my new abilities as a horticulturist, my first purchase was this gorgeous planter. It’s really amazing how plants can liven up a space.
Next up? You guessed it. Another planter. This one was so cute, I don’t know how anyone could see this in a store and not buy it. It literally spoke to me.
Seriously, how cute is this?!? All the heart eyes.
And last, but definitely not least, I picked up these lanterns to balance out the space. They make me feel like I’m coming home to someplace exotic, no matter how many cornfields I drive by on the way home.
Listen. Decor is important. It sets the tone for your life every single day. Design your space so that it brings you joy and happiness. My new front porch? All the joy and happiness!
I’ll leave you with this: which space would you rather come home to at night? The before or the after? I’m picking the after every single time.
Hey Homemakers, next time, I’m comin’ for the giant Adirondack chair! 🙂
See ya on the next post!
