Open Faced Steak Sandwich

This open faced steak sandwich is the most delicious thing I have made so far this year!
While it’s great served for lunch or dinner, I highly recommend cutting it up into smaller pieces and adding it to your cocktail party or appetizer menu. Your guests will be begging you to share the recipe. It’s just so tasty!

Open Faced Steak Sandwich

Ingredients

  • 1 chuck roast
  • steak seasoning to taste
  • 1 French baguette
  • 1 garlic Boursin cheese puck
  • 3 medium white or yellow onions, sliced
  • 8 ounces fresh mushrooms, sliced
  • extra virgin olive oil
  • salt to taste
  • fresh cracked pepper to taste
  • steak seasoning to taste
  • 2-3 Tbsp fresh thyme
  • 2-3 Tbsp fresh chives

Instructions

  • Remove meat from refrigerator and let come to room temperature (approximately 30 minutes).
  • Pat meat dry, rub with extra virgin olive and season with steak seasoning.
  • Bring grill to medium heat. (A griddle insert was used for this recipe.)
  • Caramelize onions with extra virgin olive oil and season with salt and pepper.
  • Sautee mushrooms with extra virgin olive oil and season with salt and pepper.
  • Set onions and mushrooms aside.
  • Sear all sides of the meat on medium heat.
  • Close grill and cook meat until internal temp reaches 135 degrees.
  • Optional: towards the end of cooking time, add a couple tablespoons of butter on top of the steak and let melt.
  • Pull meat off the grill and let rest for 5 minutes.
  • Cut baguette in half and drizzle with extra virgin olive oil. Place oil side down on the grill until golden brown.
  • Slice meat.
  • Top baguette with garlic Boursin cheese, mushrooms, onions, meat, thyme and chives.
  • Cut into pieces and serve as an appetizer or enjoy as an open faced sandwich. Enjoy!

Notes

A griddle insert was used to grill the meat, as well as the caramelized onions and mushrooms for this recipe. If you do not have a griddle insert, you can use a stove top for the onions and mushrooms.

OPTIONAL ADD-ONS

This open faced steak sandwich is absolutely delicious as is. If you want to take it to the next level simply add balsamic glaze and red pepper flakes. It is incredible and really takes the flavor up a notch.

LEFTOVER NOTES

This open faced steak sandwich makes fabulous leftovers. I’ve been eating the leftovers for lunch this week and it is just as tasty cold from the fridge as it was when it came off the grill!

ALTERNATIVES TO BOURSIN

If you can’t find Boursin cheese near you, try Alouette or President. Any garlic spreadable cheese will be delicious in this recipe. If you don’t care for garlic, try an herb flavor instead.

WHERE TO FIND GRIDDLE INSERTS

As mentioned above, this recipe was made on a griddle insert for a gas grill. (We have a Weber.) Make sure the griddle insert you purchase is compatible with your grill!
